Eng / YL Male Voice Choir
YL Male Voice Choir (Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat) is a Finnish pioneer of male voice choral music, performing actively in Finland and around the world. In addition to its a cappella repertoire, the choir performs and records with the most prominent orchestras and conductors of the world. Several of YL’s recordings have received international prizes. In Finland, YL’s Christmas Concerts and Spring Concerts have become important events for both choir and audience.
The oldest Finnish language choir, the YL Male Voice Choir, was founded in 1883 as an opinion leader of the Finnish high society. Its roots are in 19th century Finland, which was growing into a separate nation.
Pasi Hyökki (b. 1970) has graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki as Master of Arts (Music) in Choral Conducting. He has extended his studies with master classes from Eric Ericson and Anders Eby. Conductor of YL since autumn 2010, Pasi Hyökki is also the conductor of the Tapiola Choir and two choirs that he has established, namely the EMO Ensemble and Talla Vocal Ensemble. Hyökki has been recognized as “Best Conductor” in the Tampere Vocal Festival in 1997, in Italy in the “In...Canto sul Garda” competition in 2001, and in the Harald Andersén Chamber Choir Competition in 2003.
