Why YL?

For a male singer, YL offers the most exuberant and high-standard activity that any amateur choir in Finland can offer.

YL is a grand instrument. You get to develop your voice with excellent guidance, singing wide-ranging repertoire. The choir gather thousands of people annually to the concerts, so exciting experiences are just around the corner.

As a singer you are at the heart of the choral singing art. YL commissions and premieres pieces frequently and provides an instrument that paves new ways for the whole field. You will quickly learn a basic repertoire of traditional and entertaining pieces by which to captivate any audience. YL also performs together with the premiere orchestras, conductors and soloists of the world.

YL exports Finnish culture with its concert tours. The previous concert tours have seen YL thrill audiences in Japan, the Benelux, Germany, USA, Iceland, China, Singapore, Mexico and the Nordic countries. New tours are well planned already, and new singers have the chance to be a part of them.

YL is a youthful, vigorous and interdisciplinary social gathering, which spares no laughter, singing and activity. YL unwinds after rehearsal in the “Rabbis”, weekly sports, sauna and together with the ladies in festive dinners. The brotherly spirit of YL is summoned up by the final phrase in The “March of YL”: “Everyone is King!”

What you need to know?

We expect you to be a musically gifted male with abilities and motivation in singing to participate in this active choir hobby. The entrance exam lets you show your potential. In order to apply, you do not need to study in the Helsinki University. Students and graduates from all universities are warmly welcomed.

YL rehearses with conductor Pasi Hyökki every Tuesday between 6 and 9.20 pm in the Music Hall of the Old Student House (Vanha Ylioppilastalo, Mannerheimintie 3, 2nd floor). New singers are auditioned every primarily during the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, but also during semesters, if needed.

Admission tests start with joining the YL rehearsal at 20:30 and continue with the audition at 21:20. The audition tests your sense of pitch, your vocal range and your skills in reading scores. We also expect you to sing one song of your own choice. The conductor will invite the accepted candidates to join the choir immediately after the audition.
